Business

I am a CPA based in Montrose, Colorado with four decades of business experience as a CFO, Controller, and a consultant working with family-owned businesses. I start engagements by conducting operational and strategic assessments to provide a foundation to help build bottom-line profitability and enable them to build economic value. My style is based on establishing effective communication throughout the organization that builds trust which translates into effective change.

The ability to build trust and confidence at all organizational levels has enabled me to build long-term relationships that include executive coaching and mentoring of management teams. The ability to coach management teams of a family-owned business is a critical component of succession planning and identifying ownership transition options. This skill has been honed through working with some of the best family-owned business advisors in the country, including attorneys and psychologists. Additionally, I experienced McGladrey & Pullen’s Management Development Institute and related consulting training programs. I also have experience working with some of McGladrey’s top consultants allowing me to deliver services not available from most CPAs. I have also received training from Results Accountant’s System (RAS) and their accountant’s boot camp.

My book, Dynamics of Profit Focused Accounting, is an ideal reference for CPA’s and management on the philosophies and methodologies utilized by top organizations throughout the world. It is an easy to understand text that articulates the best attributes of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints, Balanced Scorecard, Activity-Based Management, and other world-class management philosophies.

My business and consulting focus also includes process improvement based on establishing reliable accounting systems and internal controls. It is my belief that sound business concepts are based on strategic plans and a vision that incorporates effective budgeting and forecasting. These plans are supported by sales and operational planning involving the entire breath of the management team.

My management coaching and training programs utilize and build on a foundation of lean process flow, business process management, and application of the Six Sigma toolkit. I have expanded the manufacturing concepts of lean workflow to application of accounting and streamlining of back office operations.

Because I have extensive experience as a CFO and a controller of family-owned businesses, I am able to quickly provide assistance to businesses that is not available from most other CPAs. My controllership experience includes cost accounting and strategic cost management. Smaller and mid-sized companies frequently lack experienced cost accounting personnel which enables me to be extremely effective in helping them manage and improve profitability.
